David wrote about sleep from the least sleep-friendly circumstances imaginable — caves, battlefields, a coup led by his own son. These passages are for the 3am mind: not techniques, but reasons the watch can change hands.
The Bible commands rest — it's in the ten commandments (Exodus 20:9-10) — and treats sleep as a gift, not lost productivity: "he gives sleep to his loved ones" (Psalm 127:2). David testified to sleeping in genuine danger because "you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety" (Psalm 4:8) — even while fleeing his own son (Psalm 3:5). Jesus told exhausted disciples to "come away... and rest awhile" (Mark 6:31), and promised rest to all who labor and are heavy burdened (Matthew 11:28). In scripture, rest is an act of trust: someone else stays on watch.
“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.”
"In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety." David wrote this while surrounded by real enemies — the psalm opens in distress. The logic of the last verse is what lets him close his eyes: safety doesn't come from having resolved everything, but from the one who stays awake. Sleep, here, is an act of trust.

“I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me. I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people who have set themselves against me on every side.”
"I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for Yahweh sustains me." The superscription tells you when David wrote this: fleeing from his own son Absalom's rebellion — betrayed, dethroned, hunted. And the verse he records from that night is that he slept. Not because the crisis was over; it wasn't. Because being sustained doesn't require the crisis to be over.
